Inside a Iowa recovery
Finding the rightful owner
Many accounts are listed under old names and addresses. Locating the owner, or the relatives who inherit, can take real investigative work.
Our licensed investigators do that work.Heirs need proof
Claims for someone who has died must show who is entitled to the funds, usually with a death certificate and estate or relationship documents.
We identify the heirs and prepare the documents.Business and organization claims
Companies must show they are the entity named on the account, or its legal successor after a merger or name change.
We trace the corporate history to prove the link.Safe deposit box contents
Items from safe deposit boxes are held separately from cash and must be matched carefully to their owner.
We help identify and claim them. How Iowa safeguards forgotten funds
The Great Iowa Treasure Hunt is run by the Treasurer of State. It safeguards forgotten or lost checks, bank accounts, utility refunds, and the contents of safe deposit boxes until the owner claims them.
2025 was a record year, with more than $33.6 million returned to individuals and businesses on 53,226 claims. Yet more than $648 million is still waiting, much of it for owners and heirs who are hard to find.

When a claim involves an estate
Many of the accounts we recover belong to someone who has passed away. That is when a claim becomes a legal matter: the Treasurer of State of Iowa releases the funds only to the person with the legal right to them, and that right has to be shown with court or estate documents.
When probate usually comes into play
- The owner died without a will, or the will was never filed with a court.
- The amount is large enough that the state requires a court-appointed representative.
- Several heirs share the funds, or some of them live in other states.
- The owner died years ago and the money has passed through more than one generation.

Iowa questions
Is Lifetime Financial licensed in Iowa?
Yes. We are licensed by the Iowa Department of Public Safety as a Private Investigation Agency, license PI00518, Agency 1960.
What is the Great Iowa Treasure Hunt?
It’s the name of Iowa’s program for abandoned funds, run by the Treasurer of State. It holds money and property turned over by businesses when they can’t reach the owner.
What documents will I need for a Iowa claim?
It depends on the account and your relationship to the owner. Every claim needs supporting documents that show you are entitled to the funds, and claims for someone who has died usually need additional documents about the estate or family relationship. We tell you exactly what’s needed and help you gather it.
Why do claims get delayed or sent back?
The most common reasons are missing or mismatched documents, names and addresses that don’t match the state’s records, and incomplete proof of an heir’s right to the funds. Each one can add months. We review every claim before it’s filed and answer the state’s follow-up requests, which is how we keep a 95% success rate.
